Using Frankenstein to contribute to an advertisement is very common. No matter what type of product is being released or the company who is promoting it, Frankenstein finds a way to be fit into many advertising campaigns. Frankenstein is known by many diverse groups, so the message the advertisement is sending reaches out to a wide variety of audiences. This is also useful because people will understand the references or humor used that is related to Frankenstein.

One of the many advertisements that use Frankenstein is a commercial for Osteo Bi-Flex. This commercial is a comedy about Frankenstein. They refer to Frankenstein as being so stiff and having achy joints like he did in the movie. Frankenstein explains his past about having trouble with his joints, but then proceeds to tell the audience how Osteo Bi-Flex has changed his life. It shows clips of him doing everyday activities that require movement. I thought this was a great sales pitch. It caught people’s attention because it was so funny, and of course because Frankenstein is recognized and people want to see what the commercial has to tell its viewers.

Another ad that Frankenstein is used in is for Heineken. Heineken is beer, and is claimed to be the official beer for Halloween according to the company’s ad campaign. It was a great idea to take advantage of using Frankenstein for the Halloween season, because once again, everyone is very familiar with the monster and the story itself. It is a scary story and monster and because of that it is always related to Halloween. Heineken’s advertisement also has some comedy in it. It has the monster of Frankenstein using the bolts in his neck as a bottle opener for the beer. There are many different approaches in ads that have to do with Frankenstein, and from my opinion I think they work very well and are great ideas mostly because they will always catch people’s eye from familiarity.

Frankenstein is known for its originality and popularity. There is no way around how popular this movie and book has become. There are many different reviews and opinions on this story. I found two similar opinions about sympathy toward the monster in this movie on Horror Reviews and the A.V. Club.

Bret Gallman shares this opinion of sympathy in his review of Frankenstein. He explains to us how the monster doesn’t understand the horrible actions he takes throughout the story. Gallman reminds us that, “We also come to realize that the Monster’s creator and the village townspeople are the true villains of the film, as the Monster’s fate is totally incongruous to that of his creator.” He definitely has a good point on how the Monster’s creator and townspeople and the ones who should be blamed for his killings and violent actions, because he has no control over being made into this monster with an abnormal brain. He also doesn’t realize the actual harm he is doing, he had no one to watch over him as a father figure that Frankenstein should have been. Therefore I agree with the opinion Gallman has on the understanding the audience should have for the monster who clearly is a different kind of character trying to go about life.

Another review about this movie the A.V. Club was written by Keith Phipps. He takes a very similar approach to his writings about Frankenstein. He also points out to his readers about the misfit of the monster. Phipps explains to his readers, “Frankenstein’s creature may be a monstrosity, but he’s also instantly sympathetic to anyone who’s ever felt like a misfit.” He makes an excellent point of how he can relate to anyone who has been left out or hasn’t been one to fit into the normal crowds. I would have to agree that this does take that approach on several audience members. It also helps draw in the audience’s attention because of having that relation with the monster.

The opening scene in Frankenstein filmed in the cemetery is no doubt a memorable one. The article, The Cemetery Skeleton examines this scene a little closer. The author begins stating, “Old women sobbing, a child lost in thought, grief-stricken men. The camera slides past them to the last figure, a hooded skeleton. The skeleton is an ancient and enduring symbol of death. Death’s Head skulls and crossed bones were often carved into headstones and full skeletal figures appeared as statuary alongside trumpeting angels and weeping stone maidens.” The author put this in here to give his audience a better vision of the scene. It is important to recap even the smallest details to help recapture the essence of this opening scene. The author continues his words to help keep the vision of this scene going throughout the article and help the readers recall the story line.

The author reminds us, “It’s a James Whale moment, of course, darkly humorous, but it is also a signal of Frankenstein’s maniacal focus on the job at hand, unconcerned with the consequences of his acts. As a symbolic gesture, it illustrates Frankenstein’s disrespect for Death itself.” The author’s point is to discuss Frankenstein’s eagerness to get the corpse that was just buried in the funeral him and his assistant were secretly watching, and how little values he has. I would definitely agree that this is something important to point out. He isn’t a very good person for the actions he takes in this movie, especially for disturbing the dead, and creating a horrid monster.

The skeleton is obviously there to scare the audience. This skeleton had such an impact on the scene that it reappeared in Bride of Frankenstein. The author shares his thoughts, “I wonder if the cemetery skeleton was trotted out for bit parts in other movies, or if it quietly haunted the Universal prop department, undisturbed, between Frankenstein assignments. I wonder what became of it.” This leaves us thinking that there might be more to this skeleton than just an ordinary prop. The author really emphasizes the significance of the skeleton throughout this article and opens this readers’ minds to the details of this scene.

Nate Yapp, a member of Classic-Horror wrote an intriguing review about Frankenstein. He discusses both the 1931 movie and the novel written by Mary Shelley. He makes various points throughout his review. He begins by emphasizing how Frankenstein has had a great amount of influence on society for its popularity. It is easy for anyone to identify who Frankenstein is with the very familiar physical attributes he has. Yapp then goes on to recall the plot of the movie and the more famous and memorable scenes that take place. He specifically reminds us of the opening scene in the graveyard, and the creation of the monster with the electric shock. He also believes that the scene when the monster is revealed is his favorite scene. I would have to admire his judgment and agree that it is a great scene. It is full of emotion and excitement.

Yapp lists the actors and crew in the movie and credits their good and not so great work. He especially credits Boris Karloff, the monster, for his amazing work. I support his praise for his acting. Without Karloff the movie would not be so popular and scary when it came out. He does tear down Mae Clark, who plays Elizabeth on her ability to enunciate and acting way too worked up in the scene where she believes something horrible is going to happen. To me, all of the acting seemed overdone because of the time period so I didn’t notice much of a difference. He also gives credit to the amazing design of the monster to the director James Whale, and makeup artist, Jack Pierce. Yapp makes a point to applaud Todd Browning for cinematography. Throughout this review Frankenstein is recognized for several wonderful qualities about the movie that is very much deserved.

I never truly realized just how many movies are remixes. After watching the clip “Everything is a Remix” it really showed me almost all movies these days are remixes. I was never really into old films so I am not too familiar with them. I have read some books that have been remade into films though. One of my favorite series is The Twilight Saga, which isn’t very surprising for a teenage girl. I absolutely love the books. They are amazing romantic novels. I do not like the movies at all. The acting is horrible, and they did a horrible job casting. The cast does not match the characters and their personalities in the book. Everyone looks at the series as a joke now because of the movies because they have horrible acting, but usually those who judge The Twilight Saga have not read the books.

Another book I enjoyed was The Last Song. The movie for that came out about two years ago. They cast Miley Cyrus as the main character, Ronnie. I did not feel this was a good choice because people didn’t respect the movie as much or really seem interested in it. I believe this was because Miley Cyrus was the main character. Miley Cyrus was just getting done with her career on Disney Channel. So the audience didn’t see her as a serious actress, therefore making the movie not as respected as the book was. The book had emotional appeal and had a great plot twist. I think the movie didn’t have these qualities.

Another remix that has done repeatedly is Cinderella. There are so many versions of Cinderella, such as the “Cinderella Story” and then there are also remixes off of that movie as well. There are some good remixes of Cinderella, but I think this story is so popular and well liked that people want to keep remaking it to their own. Now it isn’t getting as much attention because all of the stories are too much alike and there isn’t any surprise or much of a difference.

I grew up in a small town just outside of South Bend, Indiana, called Granger. I love Granger and the people in it. It is a growing town and hopefully will be more known soon. I live in a neighborhood with lots of friendly neighbors and friends. I moved there when I was six and had lots of kids around me to play with. I loved this idea. There was always something to do with the neighborhood kids, such as neighborhood hide and go seek, riding bikes, water gun fights, ect. My elementary and middle school were both located in Granger, but my high school was in the next town over, Mishawaka. My high school had a little over 3,000 students in it. I loved how big our school was. There was plenty of chances to meet new friends, and it offered lots of different opportunities for every kind of student’s interest.

I have an older brother, Sean. He is a very smart student and he also attends Purdue. He is in pharmacy school. It wasn’t the easiest following in his footsteps throughout high school since he was considered the brain child. He is the best brother though and was always there to help me out growing up and throughout school, and he still is. My Parents, Pat and Judy, are the most loving parents a daughter could ask for. They have always been there to support me throughout school, sports, and the hard and good times. I haven’t always been really close with my family. Infact, growing up there were quite a bit of fights in the Bridges’s household. Although, now we all couldn’t be closer and we have a great time together. I always look forward to my breaks with school to be with my family again and spend quality time together.

I had it pretty good growing up, a loving, supportive family, good school system, town, and friends. I wouldn’t change it for anything. I have lots of great memories with many people who care about me. I will never forget them or the times I shared with them.
